| Take some pride When your putting a business together it can be a real temptation to try to get something online and selling right away. Take some time to do it right. Doing it right always is a process and usually involves getting other opinions and looking at the way other sellers do things. If you set up a web site, you want to try and incorporate things you like from websites that you enjoy using. I regularly read message boards for a host of ideas on how to make things better and find out valuable tips. If someone else is in business and successful, most want to talk about their victories. Buy some software to make your presentations look professional and make your buyers feel comfortable shopping with you. Make your customer comments available for other people to see, it helps your sales when people think you’re more credible. Offer to answer any and every question via email. I get a lot of emails with questions that I state very clearly in my auction ads. Most of them are about shipping. I know that when I get a one-word answer from a seller it makes me wonder. Put a little time into your replies. It’s a sales game; people want some attention and a little effort that you care. I try to treat people how I would want to be treated. Put that kind of effort into your product line as well. Believe it or not, people like the Mom & Pop storefronts and sellers more than dealing with a major retailer. At the Mom & Pop store it feels more like old times when people care. They know that at smaller businesses need your patronage. I learned that more than once selling our table sets. People like to feel like they are liked and appreciated. I always leave email open so that they are invited to continue asking questions. I once had a customer who was so happy with her set that she sent me pictures of her child having a tea party with all her stuffed animals. What a great compliment. |
| Another area of pride is watching your shipments using your tracking numbers. People are blown away when they find out they you’re watching the shipping progress. Keep up to date, don’t file the paperwork until the product is delivered and they let you know it arrived safe and sound. These kinds of things pay dividends later down the road. With your product: Make sure your give it your best, if your crafting or manufacturing your product, be picky. Go the extra mile and make it your best. If the item is a gift for the holiday, address the package to the child or dress up the box with stickers. My kids go nuts when a pretty box comes to our house with their names on it. Those kind of extra touches will win the hearts of your customers. If you have a web site with other products you can be sure that they will come back and order from you regardless of your prices. Follow up If you don’t hear back from customers, follow up. If I don’t receive any feedback during an auction, I try and find out why. I am not saying everything has to be glowing, but if you go the extra mile people will share their experiences. If you’re on Ebay and you have radiant feedback, people will feel comfortable buying from you. Make it count. |
