So what does woodworking have to do with making your own brand or
product line on the internet?  Well for starters, a lot of people are very
talented woodworker's.  If you have a workshop and some good ideas, you
are well on your way to creating some very good products for sale.  The
key here is not to offer products that are of the "typical" woodworking fare.
The "typical" projects people used to be, spice racks, tray sets, sconces,
paper towel holders and the like.  These typical projects used to be aimed
at the demographic audience of senior citizens.  Although this demographic
is "ok" its not as dynamic as other target audiences.

If you expand your research and offer exciting products that are well built
and handmade, you will have a better shot at victory.  Custom furniture is
always a good line to carry.  Be careful to offer products that can be
shipped (smaller) or offer a freight solution from the day you go into
business.  See our article section for more research into this field.

What it takes to get started:

  • A good knowledge of woodworking and a basic shop set up.
  • The ability to buy wood at good prices, you would want to avoid
buying it retail, so you would go to a mill or wood supplier.
  • You will want to find the point in time where you stop making the
units yourself and begin having them made for you according to your
design.  Time is the enemy here and you will want to save as much
time as possible once the product line takes off.
  • A marketing plan setup before you make the first bit of sawdust.
